Remembrance Day vandal nabbed

In a recent blog I highlighted an act of vandalism that had taken place in Worthing, Sussex, when a bunch of vandals daubed Nazi swastikas and SS symbols on a war memorial: I’m extremely pleased to say that police have made an arrest. (see BBC News story)

At the risk of sounding politically incorrect, should this 21 year old be found guilty, I for one hope the courts don’t simply hand out a slapped wrist and a few hours community service. But what would be a suitable punishment? Public flogging? Deportation? I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

  Yeah public floging was one of those things I'd had in mind. My father, bless him, was a simple soul and I can tell you his reaction to something like this would have been:
  
  "Horse-whip them! Bring back the birch!"

I remember that post of yours Usk. very well.
I'm glad they found him, but he should have a good punishment:
-to start would be him cleaning all that mess
-then some time in prision, he has 21years old, would be just great, he would have some scares inside!... but i don't know if is enough, really!

  It's difficult to know what would be an appropriate punishment isn't it? UK prisons are so overcrowded, the judiciary are loathe to send people down for what would probably be classed a minor crime. I'm in favour of a public flogging myself, but realise of course that makes me extremely politically incorrect and a fascist to boot!

    Yes, it's difficult! But they could force him clean various sites with grafitti paintings! Instead of let the city dirt he will clean it

One's initial reaction tends to be of the 'String'em up' variety, but I think this ignoramus would benefit more from education if it were possible. Some appropriate degree of humiliation might add to the effectiveness too. Presumably the idiot has a like-minded peer group to whom he will return, the success of any remedial action will depend on their response as much as his. Were his actions motivated by adolescent bravado or is he part of some local right-wing political group? These things are never that simple are they? He may have a whole string of issues of his own that need sorting out before any progress can be made.

On the other hand, they could just put the little toe rag up against the wall and.....

  We have a saying in Wales, "You can't educate pork!" Although the sensitive course of action would be to try and re-educate this person, I honestly wonder whether it would be a gross waste of time.
  
  You're right about the complexity of the situation: the likelihood of said toe rag being part of some pseudo neo-fascist group is quite high. If that is the case then the act may well have been some right of passage. Even so, the act was mindless, selfish and ill-timed. Hmmmm....

Simple - Rub his nose in it and keep rubbing his nose in it till he is noseless as well as brainless !

Costs the taxpayer nothing unlike imprisonment at $70,000 per idiot per year !

I like the justice an American judge was handing out - For calling the police pigs one young man was made to spend the day in a pig stye in the town square and for shouting abuse at churchgoers a couple were made to lead a donkey through the town. So I think something like being dressed as a Holocaust victim in the middle of a roundabout in the busiest part of town. Public humiliation seems to fit the bill in cases like this.
