The working week’s over thankfully and most of us can all relax for a couple of days. It’s not been a good week, health wise, for quite a few of us so perhaps we’ll have a chance now to get our collective act together. Man-flu is a terrible thing of course, but I’m inclined to the impression that my own particular brand of lurgy is the very worst kind of man-flu that’s ever been experienced.
So what’s the point of this evening’s blog? Well it’s simple. I’ve tried the Beecham’s and the Lemsip and all the other over-the-counter crap to try and kill off my bug and failed miserably. Crapola! Now I’m about to resort to a tried and tested Naval cure; one that will certainly aid my sleeplessness too, although the morning after effects can be somewhat tedious. I’m going to resort to several large doses of kye!
Kye? What's kye?
Okay, let’s educate you land lubbers. Kye is frequently described (erroneously in my view) as hot chocolate or cocoa. In a way that’s what it is, but I’m here to tell you it’s more than that, kye is the most delicious drink in the middle of a cold night (witness Jack Hawkins in The Cruel Sea. But kye is also quite restorative and here’s the recipe so those of you also suffering out there can join me if you wish.
Kye – the matelot’s saviour
Ingredients
• One pound block of (preferably) Carsons chocolate, or any other brand of cooking chocolate (use Cadbury’s if absolutely desperate!)
• One tin Carnation condensed milk
• Boiling water
• Sugar if required.
Method
Grate the block down using cheese grater, allow 3 dessertspoons grated chocolate per cup
Pour in a small amount of boiling water
Stir until chocolate is melted
Add sugar and carnation milk to taste.
Further stir until the mix is smooth
Continue stirring and top up with secret ingredient.
Enough to put hairs on anybody's chest! A grand pick-me-up.
What’s the secret ingredient? Why Nelson’s Blood of course – Pusser’s Rum. None of your nancy stuff, it has to be Pusser's Rum (54.5% proof)…
Hence the headache the following morning!
Wish me luck. ![]()
