Mince pies banned!

Did you know it's illegal to eat Mince Pies on Christmas Day?

Oliver Cromwell banned Christmas pudding, mince pies and anything to do with gluttony. That law has never been rescinded so mince pies are illegal.

Having turkey this Christmas? You'd better think again and eat goose instead, as in 1588 Elizabeth I enacted a law making it an offense to eat any other bird on Xmas day.

Finally, in case you were thinking of driving to church tomorrow: don't! According to the Holy Days and Fasting Days Act of 1551, which has not yet been repealed, everyone must attend church on Christmas Day on foot.

Anyone else know any bizarre laws still on the statute book?

Any person found breaking a boiled egg at the sharp end will be sentenced to 24 hours in the village stocks (enacted by Edward VI). Nate.

Oh well, I'll be driving back from church after Midnight, but walking the morning...

Being a vegetarian, eating any kind of bird makes me shudder.

As for mince pies - well, I've had it!

  We had spinach soup followed by roast pork with peach and celery stuffing and rounded it all off with chocolate truffle cheesecake: boy am I fat today!

    LOL, my Santa was a bit naughty! Most of my aunts gave me pyjamas! So, now i'm with pyjamas for the entire year!
    And chocolates Then i got few more things, nice ones.
    And lots food! Desserts were/are my favourites
    Had a spinach food as you!
    Your lunch sounds delicious Usk! With peach? Never tried it.
    LOL, i feel the same, fat...we eat too much by this time, but is all so good as that chocolate truffle cheesecake! and as my desserts! amazing!

Do some cities have rules where it's OK to kill Scot and/or Welsh people who are out at night? Seem to remember such comments when doing night-time tours - Not sure if tourist tales or some delightful Norman traditions... I think York may have been one place I heard such an idea...

  Yes they do. It's alright to shoot a Welsh person at any time on a Sunday, with a longbow in the Cathedral Close, Hereford, while in Chester you can shoot a Welshman inside the city walls with a bow and arrow after midnight. I'm not sure about laws applying to the Scots. Makes you glad to be part of a minority race doesn't it?

      A new career in the heritage industry, selling chain-mail to would be Welsh tourists. Hmmmm.......
