  • What is a blog?

A colleage asked today, "What exactly is a blog?"

"It's an online diary" I quipped, "where people like you and me share our thoughts and ideas."

She looked at me a tad sideways and shook her head. "Why would I want to put my thoughts online?"

"Well," I said "a blog's a bit more than that really..."

Here's a fairly accurate definition for anyone here who didn't know:

A blog is a website where entries are made in journal style and displayed in a reverse chronological order.

Blogs often provide commentary or news on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs. Most blogs are primarily textual although some focus on photographs (photoblog), sketchblog, videos (vlog), or audio (podcasting), and are part of a wider network of social media.

The term "blog" is derived from "Web log." "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

And did you know that as of November this year, blog search engine Technorati was tracking nearly 60 million blogs! Can you just imagine...

  • Following on from yesterday...

I blogged a bit yesterday about the society we find ourselves living in and mentioned Asbos being seen as a rite of passage by certain groups. So this morning there's a new report that states around 55% of anti-social behaviour orders have been breached. What are we doing about that I wonder? Not very much probably!

The report from the National Audit Office goes on to say Asbos were either breached by offenders committing more offences or by breaking the terms of the order and that 35% of Asbo holders breached the order on five or more occasions, but the average number of breaches was four per person. One offender was found to have breached an Asbo 25 times!

Why do we allow this to happen?

Why aren't we punishing these offenders in a more meaningful way?

Why do the rest of us abide by the laws of the land and suffer in silence because these scum think they have the right to whatever they like?
