What's wrong here?

What do you think about when you look at this photograph? It was taken yesterday and while it may not be a masterpiece, I don’t think it’s too had on the eye.

But to my mind there’s something horribly wrong here; as I said it was taken during my lunch period yesterday, Monday 26 February, on the outskirts of Newport, South Wales.

Look closely – then tell me what’s wrong here.

February Colours?

No clue? Hmmm...

Well here’s the thing. We’ve had a lot of rain in this area through the winter, so why does everything look so dry here? Even the ivy climbing the trees on either side of the path looks dull and lifeless.

Global Warming? Well maybe....

hey yea - global warming - its greenhouse gasses - global warming quick someone give usksider some cash to compensate for the global footprint

Fine photograph. Can't see the brightness or otherwise of the ivy. It's stretching the imagination a bit re global warming.

        Yes I looked at the chemical plant photos and thought the grass looked a bit brown. Hope you don't live downwind of that place!

Try drainage - maybe yours is better than ours, or you've had sufficient dry spells to allow the water table to drop; our ground is not drying out.

Although the colours are more-or-less what you might expect at a particular time of the year, they are not February colours and some of the water may be feeding premature greening which is dying off after short bursts (temperatures a bit up and down. There do seem to be sprouting bushes, unless they are evergreens, though from what I can see, it does not appear to be so.

Climate change will, no doubt, have some bearing on the interesting weather patterns, but not your missing sludge.

  Not that you can see it, but the water table is extremely high in this particular area; the surrounding land quite boggy. There are drainage reens criss-crossing the area and all are full (some do rise and fall with the tide, but most have a fairly constant water level).
  
  I think what surprised me was the lack of colour in the grasses; things look quite parched despite there being water in abundance.
  
  The chemical plant's boundary is a fence hidden by the hedge on the right and I really can't help but wonder...

    The parched grass could be a clue to something, what I don't know, but then you would expect the bushes and tree to be showing some signs of distress, if that's what it is.

      Yes it's difficult to know. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like in a few weeks time, but this much is for sure, if things remain much the same I'll be rather more concerned.

  Yes it has that late in the year feel to it doesn't it? Much more so than end of winter/start of spring.

I must be thick or something....have studied pic and it looks like a nice pic of um trees and grass etc....cant see what's wrong with it......but I guess its not nice to have a chemical plant nearby......looks like a nice pic to my puzzled eyes......

  Never thick Mum, I wouldn't believe that for a single moment.
  
  It's the colours that drew my attention; they're more akin to a late September or October day following a long dry summer than a February morning after weeks of rain. Why does everything look so parched, when the ground is wet? Of course you can't see that the ground was wet because the pathway is man-made and drained...
