Wentwood Reservoir

Off water gentle sunshine glints
Soft breezes stirring surface ripples
Birdsong wafts among the trees
Life abounds in this early season

Light reflecting Nature’s tints
Fox stoops to water’s edge and drinks
Toads mate to guarantee the future
Of their amphibian colony

I am at one with my surroundings
Myself a part of Nature’s scene
Sitting on dried bracken covered moist earth
Observing the rich patterns of life

Moorhens, coots and ruddy ducks
Sail calmly by on dappled wavelets
Fishermen casting line-bound fly
Hope to temp the wise old trout

A tractor chugging into life
Disturbs the local rookery
And midnight crows take cawing flight
Wheeling noisy patterns in the sky

How sweet the air this sunlit afternoon
How clean the feel of grass between my fingers
How sad my idyll cannot last
How slim the desire for humdrum life

A barking dog
An owner’s call
My reverie shattered
Time to go
