Tretower Castle

Inspired by Kiki I decided to post a few images of Tretower Castle, Powys.

Tretower is a medieval motte-and-bailey castle established during the Norman conquest of Brycheiniog. Entrance to the castle is via Tretower Court.

Tretower Court is a restored courtyard house with origins in the fourteenth century. Rebuilt by Sir Roger Vaughan in the fifteenth century. Magnificent timberwork survives in the northern and western ranges, with later Classical-style windows dating to the 1630s. I'll post some images of the Court if there's any interest.

It has been ages since I have been to Tretower! Thanks for the memories.

I love Castell Coch near Cardiff, that was a brilliant place to go

  As yes, Bute's Folly.
  Castell Coch is undergoing some restoration just at the moment, but when they've completed the roof work and the scaffolding has been removed I'll pop along and shoot some fresh images.

    They were beginning the restoration when we were there about 5 years ago. It will be nice to see it when it is finished

      They stopped for a while (ran out of money perhaps?) and started again about 15 months ago. The fairytale castle among the trees doesn't look quite the same with scaffolding around the towers.

Great photos especially when enlarged. I can vaguely remember being taken to Tretower as a child. My dad passed his interest in castles on to me. I too would like to see some photos of Castell Coch, or other castles.

  We're blessed with a plethera of castles in this area and I have a double interest in history and photography I can guarantee there will be lots more ancient monument type pictures in the pipeline.

    Yes Monmouthshire is one of the best areas for castles. I remember them from when I grew up in the Forest of Dean not too far away. Looking forward to some more castle posts.

      Well I have to go into my local town shortly (Caldicot) so will make sure I take a camera and photograph the castle where Henry VIII was conceived...

Yes, lets go into it, it's an interesting theme
And so much to show and find, share, talk about as some have so many tgings and histories related..anyway is always great..now i know one day if i'l go there i'l visit this Catsle for sure, thanks Usk.
Pardon me, for come only now but im fighting with my laptp to blog since 8h.pm..i think im going to try blog about this slowness again, i did twice and was erased dunno how !!! Didn't manage reply on mine to no one, only to you and one more persons this evenn, than after eat tried come online and as really wanted and meanwhile tried post about what was happening now i notice that is more than 11h30pm already!
Is so frustrating when they do this to us!!!
No worries, yes we can always continue to chat tomorrow, i also have to wake up early.
Really great idea of yours of posting these pics bcz you in UK have so many Castles, and so, i find them fabulous.

  I seem to have failed again in the sleep-stakes, but hey at least Blogland isn't on a go-slow at this time of day; last night everything ground to a halt a couple of times.
