Questions, questions - your opinion please

I've been thinking about the possibility of selling some of my photographs at a local art sale: 'Art on the Railings' in Chepstow.

Some of my landscapes have attracted a bit of interest, but I thought I might try moving some of the abstract stuff too; hence the reason behind this post.

Years ago I spent hours in the darkroom treating images to get the effect I desired. These days I tend to work digitally and don't have access to a darkroom of my own anymore.

So anyway, I'd like your opinion on the two following 'treatments'. I chose the subject matter to be fairly neutral in an attempt not to influence...

I prefer the second one - it looks like a snow scene. I love the skyline but not the foreground.

Interesting pair, but not quite "art" enough to sell, I reckon you should try printing them together with one inverted or reversed as "reflections" - make it more of a talking point, which is what people buy that sort of thing for - especially for offices and public spaces.

Commercially speaking, you need to think "down" a bit, unless you can guarantee to get customers of a sufficiently high level of understanding and intelligence.

  I wasn't actually thinking of offering the above as sales items, it was more the idea I was floating. That said I can see there's mileage in your comment, reflections wise, so thanks very much for that.
  
  You're right of course, the buying public do tend to be 'uneducated' and often buy on impulse; I've been guilty of it myself and suspect we all have.

I prefer the first one and I like all the detail in it. My first reaction to the second one was that it felt a bit sinister, as if the place was under attack. You know me and my vivid imagination!

Don't know enough about art or photography to judge their commercial value.

BTW are these photos of Newport?

  The image is of a part of Newport, yes. From the Cardiff side and looking down over what used to be an industrial area and the docks. The Transporter Bridge is visible in the centre skyline.

Do either of these images interest you? Sorry, but in a word, no. Although that might be because of the subject. Could you, as Munzly says above, try us with another example? Although, come to think of it, I'm probably not of a sufficiently high level of understanding and intelligence to appreciate your work anyway. James.

  That's okay James; I certainly wouldn't expect these type of effects to appeal to everyone and really appreciate your honesty. I'm not of the ilk who expects to be praised for anything and everything.
  
  Yes I'll work on one of the images I'd had in mind for this and post it during the week. Always assuming I'm happy with the result that is.

  Can't make up my mind whether I should frame them, or just mount them? Mounting the prints would be cheaper, but then the purchaser may choose an inapprpriate frame...

I loved the first one, but didn't like the second one.. it was quite sinister to me.

I love cities and city scenes, though. So, the subject matter did interest me! I like your industrial areas pictures, too.

Type of show you are talking about will have very mixed audience so you can be arty, populist or a mix of both. I know someone who took part in similar show down Cardiff Bay - No sales, but affirmation and people enjoyed treatments of familiar views. I think it's a nice project to take part. If people enjoying, but not necessarily buying would be pleasurable, then worthwhile.
I know I answered a question you DIDN'T ask, but hopefully, food for thought!

If I'm honest, yes of course I'd like to sell a few images, but I'm more interested at this stage to see what Joe Public's reaction will be to the stuff I do.

  In that case, go for it! It's a nice way to spend the day. My memories are a very nice picnic lunch we had and the tops of my feet catching the sun in my sandals, as well as people enjoying my ex's pics.

I was taught at art school that art is a personal view of life, if you like it that's o.k. I am a present having some of my artwork on show on a sale or return basis in a local interior decor shop. If it sells, good, if it does't I'll take it back and change the picture. Using a digital camera( I too have given up the darkroom) I take local scenes and then make watercolour and pen and ink pictures as well as abstracts, then turn them into high definition prints. Give it a try what have you got to loose.
