I think it's supposed to be a version of the little mushroom people found in the Super Mario video games... well, that's what it looks like to me, it probably has a less geeky version too

That does look like that Mario guy mushroom thingy who appears when you get a new life - but I think Luigi's cooler. I mean, he can grow big and small as well, but he's got STYLE!

It's not a name, but I can't get "Head over Heels" out of my mind...

From the bottom he seems to have his feet, followed by his head (!!) and then his rump.
