i work there,they boiled,mixed,distilled,all types of oils,waxes,and greases,building date is 1844,sailing ships came from baltics,probably whaling ind,,,we still sell oil,greases,,there are still big vats upstairs,belt driven,big cogs ntanks,n pigeons,,cheers,,

I didn't say I approved, but back in Victorian times, before town gas was used for lighting, the whole of middle class Britain relied on whale oil for lighting. Poor people did it in the dark and the posh could afford candles.

You can always tell if a brass lamp was intended for colza or whale oil or for paraffin by its shape. With paraffin the wick hangs vertically into the lamp because it can easily absorb the fuel. With anything else, the wick is inserted sideways on, to help the thicker oil sit just beneath the lighted wick.
But Baltic oil.... no idea!-

What an excellent snippet of information; thanks for that. I really had no idea.

The Baltic Oil Works started life refining whale oil; these days it's all about specialist fuels and lubricants.
