It's interesting isn't it? I know someone who shuts her eyes and goes absolutely rigid if she has to cross a bridge. It's scary if se happens to be driving!

I'm not so keen on that section of the south-bound M5 by Bristol where you're suddenly much higher than the north-bound M5, and am not at all willing to go into the outside lane if I'm driving (with my eyes are well and truly wide open) until we're all joined up again.
If someone else is driving, and goes in the outside lane, my eyes are often closed.-

I'm exactly the same! Hurrah, thanks for letting me know I am not alone in antipathy towards that bit of road. I always breathe in so I am not quite so near the outer edge!

I know several others who aren't keen on it either!!

I'm completely the opposite; I really like that section of road (southbound) because it opens up such a wonderful vista over the valley.
Going northbound on that section always intimidates me a little because of the wall.-

Now there's an interesting variation...
I like the view of the Southbound section - provided I'm not in the outside lane!! I just have visions of something going wrong, and me crashing through the barrier, and landing me and my passengers on numerous cars/vans/lorries etc on the Northbound section.
Come to think of it, I rarely drive in the outside lane going north either, but mind the wall far less the possibility of the above scenario.
I think I have far too vivid an imagination..-

There's nothing wrong with having a vivid imagination... well most of the time anyway.
I 'saw' all kinds of horrid endings while driving on a reduced section of the M6 on one occasion. Concrete barriers to my left and an articlated wagon to my right. Another large lorry on my rear bumper and a stream of traffic in front. Nowhere to go... and those very large wheels seeming to get closer and closer...-

Like to add thick fog to that! I had a similar set of circumstances on the M40 with the fog as well...

My wife had a thing about bridges, she would not even walk accross a footbridge. The we went on a motorcycle holiday through France and came to an enormous bridge connecting two sides of an estuary. We had no other way of continuing our route so we had to go for it. Having been brave enough to open her eyes half way over she suddenly found a whole new perspective on the surroundings. Now she actually likes going over bridges. I'm not saying you should all buy a motorbike and go to France but it's a good excuse for a cure.

I understand fear of bridges is quite common; maybe they should make riding bikes over French bridges an authorised cure?

I have a friend who always, but always persuades someone else to drive if there's a bridge she want to admire.. especially coming north on the M5 past Bristol!
