As the winters tend to get warmer, maybe they don't know that it is winter?
I am sure that is not the right explananation but I have no better. -

I wondered that, but I may be wrong about them hibernating too.

Grey squirrels don't hibernate in the bear/dormouse way of a very deep sleep lasting for months, but just stay in their nests longer when it's really cold (a bit like teenagers, but cuter!). So, the warmer the weather, the more you see of them. Our resident ones have been about almost every day this year.
-
- Saturday, 29. Dec, 2007 @ 18:11:33
that's interesting. I was gonna agree that its not been that cold. Did the red squirrels hibernate? Do you still get red ones as I only ever see grey ones near me?
Good point Usky!

I haven't seen a red squirrel in years and never saw one in the wild in Wales. As far as I know the greys drove them out of this part of the world years ago.

Oh well that explains it then; thanks Lois. No wonder the little darlings are roaming far and wide.
-
- Saturday, 29. Dec, 2007 @ 19:36:19
yes I thought they were supposed to
....nice pic btw!
I saw a //hedgehog// beadling about up the road the other day...now that cannot be good.....
....they definitely ought to be hibernating......-

- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 06:49:25
I haven't seen many hedgehogs this year; loads of squirrels, rabbits, other rodents, occasional foxes and badgers, even the odd deer, but only a couple of hedgehogs. Odd, eh?
-
- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 09:06:26
yes.....I haven't seen many either
but there was this big one beadling up the road the other day....
though I'm sure it should have been hibernating......Loads of town foxes strolling about........8 ....bold as brass.....-

Foxes seem to have become quite used to people don't they? I still tend only to see them in the fields, but there are plenty about.
I was just sorting out a couple of images of a hedgehog I took earlier in the year...-
- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 09:12:49
yes....these ones go trotting along very purposefully and get more confident by the year......well I guess everybody just leaves them alone.....so they have not learned to fear.....
-

- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 09:18:57
Further than that, people feed them and that just encourages familiarity. I understand why they do it of course, but it sure ain't good for the foxes.
-
- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 09:24:51
no it isn't
town foxes are so different from country ones too.....much greyer and with very much thinner tails.....

I guess that'd down to poor diet, but obviously can't be certain.

I am glad we have Lois. I thought that all 'Squibbles' hibernated but then I suppose I read too much Beatrice Potter (and I did call them 'Squibbles' until I was far too old to do so ... 44 or so
I miss them though. All we have are big old, noisy old possums.-

Lois is a star isn't she? A veritable fount of knowledge.
Oh and I'd love to see your possums...
-
- Sunday, 30. Dec, 2007 @ 09:49:43
I don't show my possums to everyone you know

They are rather odd looking characters with googly eyes and pointy noses but lovely fur which varies from dark gingery brown to downright orange. They produce some very funny noises including, on occasions, an interesting dirty old man heavy breathing sound!
They are so full of disease though that the Kiwifolk have even pursuaded me that it is OK to treat them as pests. I still draw a line at the school Possum Hunts to raise money for the PTA though. These include lovely crowd-pleasers such as possum-throwing and heaviest possum competitions. Makes our good old village fetes look positively lame
Give me a squibble anytime.-

Uh hum... well... um...

They sound interesting beasts, but I don't think I could go in for the possum party games bit... very odd behaviour if you ask me.

Many species of ground squirrel like the flickertail hibernate in winter. They hibernation generally lasts for five to six months of the year. On the other hand tree squirrels are active throughout. However, they are not seen around as they prefer snuggle up with their family in their warm cozy nests and thus conserve body heat. Squirrels tend to spend all their lives within an area of three to five acres. If there is a short warm spell, tree squirrels will emerge briefly to replenish their stores. Squirrels can sense the slightest change in weather and bury nuts in underground stores or even indulge in a spot of binge-eating. Arctic ground squirrels live through the coldest winters. They go into hibernation and their bodies cool to below freezing temperature as their bodies all but shut down. There are some scientists that are trying to understand their super-cooling talents in the hope of assisting long-distance space travel as well as finding a cure or prevention for strokes.

One of the things I love about Blogland is the way you guys always come up with such great information. Who'd have though our Jack would know so much about squirrels and their bedtime habits?

Seriously; great info Jack.
