Where's Rapunzel when you need her?

Like many other castles, Chepstow was faced when it was built; coated with a white plaster. You can see in the image below that traces of the facing still remain.

The point is, the castle stands atop the cliff-banks of the River Wye... can you imagine how spectacular it must have looked all white and crisp and powerful in the morning sunlight...

In my over-active imagination, this stalagmite in an underground rock pool reminds me of an island rock-stack sticking up from a calm ocean on a alien world...
