You know, if it served the purpose of keeping another animal alive, I don't have a problem with its death. That's life, we are born and we die. The bird's death wasn't wasted, it provides lots of food for so many important little creatures (bugs, worms, insects etc.)

Absolutely. It may look/seem cruel to us, but killing to survive is acceptable and of course there are the bi-products of a kill that feed so many other things.
