Usky's Desktop

by Usksider @ Friday, 02. May, 2008 - 05:48:20

Do you folks change your Desktop Wallpaper from time to time? I do. In fact I change mine every few weeks... probably monthly in fact, although I've never consciously changed the image on any specific day... anyway I changed my Desktop yesterday and thought I'd share the image with you...

This is a little detail shot of a rusty iron ring I posted here some weeks ago...

The one in the foreground here in fact. :)

So anyway, Rusty Usky's Desktop Wallpaper is currently a rust chip! :))

I suppose I should get me a "spicey" one? But on second thoughts!

I would if I were you...

What? Get one or not get one?

Get one.... I'd be happy to make it for you.

I've heard that one before! :>>

The offer stands...

It better be some pebbles on a beach with the caption "Strangers on the Shore"

What's 'Spicy' about pebbles?

Give me chance to wake up properly - I still haven't had a coffee!

That's not my fault... I've made some.

What a coincidence! I've just changed mine to this magnificent oak tree that was posted this morning.
http://www.londondailynaturephoto.co.uk/index.php?showimage=416
I change it fairly regularly having had an old aeroplane, a snow leopard and spring blossom recently. Cheers!

Isn't that a beauty? Great choice Mr F

It's good to freshen up your desktop regularly isn't it? :)

It certainly is! Thanks Usky!
I rarely get fed up with the one I have it's just that I find one that it's really worth replacing it with. Cheers!

I like to keep mine for a few weeks: in idle moments, the continued study of a scene can turn up new insights - like re-reading a favourite book.

You can see mine in a sneak preview of a new blog I'm in the middle of designing: here

Shh - don't tell anyone else ;)

Wow! There are some wonderful shapes among those trees Lois... I could spend a few hours just looking into that wood...

Are you thinking of decamping?

No, definitely not. I wanted to find out a bit more about ASP.NET, and also have a stand-alone blog where I could show off my photos in a design that was exactly how I wanted it. Doing the CSS and coding from scratch is much more flexible than the customisation here.

I'm glad you like the photo - I shall change my desktop soon to a spring one, I think.

Spot on with regards the lack of flexibility for blog design here Lois. I played around with some ASP.NET stuff myself a while back; there doesn't seem to be much you can't do with it. I'll have to keep an eye on your new blog to see how things progress. :)

Once you get to grips with it, Blogengine.Net seems quite easy to mess around with (heck - I can do it!). I don't know how it would stand up to a high-traffic site like yours though. I am using an XML database - but you can get it to run on SQL too.

I used XML too, but only because that was what was installed. I'm told SQL is more efficient, though I doubt that's really true. You have to get inside the ASP.NET mindset don't you? Fine once you do though. :)

I know that SQL is much better for high-volume sites than Access databases, f'rinstance. You can only have about 8 concurrent connections with Access before the web server falls over; the limit with SQL server is much higher (thousands?).

It also supports transactions (and hence roll-back etc.). I assume XML may be similarly limited?

You are right about the mindset. I knew a bit of ASP before - and not sure that helped at all. Like trying to learn a new foreign language and getting the vocabulary mixed up!

Spot on.... Access is okay for small stuff (you might actually manage as many as 20 concurrent users on a good day), but SQL is much more robust.

Not sure about XML to be honest...

I'm kind of "Why change if if I still like looking at it" about it all.

Though, when I was last having a really good go at the family tree, I had a lovely photo of my great-great-great-great grandmothers grave which I used as desktop for a while. The bits of her story I've pieced together have fascinated me, and I have a feeling we'd not be dissimilar in character. (Stubborn, making the most of a situation...)

There you are then... there family gene. Your forebear sounds the sort of lady it would be interesting to meet. :)

I used to be much the same with my desktop, but to be honest I have a lot of images I really like and it seems a shame not to rotate at least some of them for added colour to my workspace.

It could also be I've very few images other than the ones that come with the computer to chose from....

Happy to share some of mine, if there's anything you'd really like?

I'm waiting for the day I win one!!

Offering you a freebie... ;)

But, if I spot one it the meantime, I might well say!! Thank you.

You'll be most welcome. :)

The first image speaks volumes. There is a lot going on in that picture. I see pain, strength and a quietness. Don't ask why and I am NOT drunk. Nor have I been ingesting anything that alters my mind. Unless grapefruit has some side-effects!!!

:>>

That's interesting Mama, I think there's a lot in that image too... especially when viewed at desktop size (or above). And for the record I'm not drunk either... unless carbonated water has asimilar effect to your grapefruit! :))

I often change my desktop - one of my favourites was a copy of Mulder's poster 'I want to believe' with a flying saucer on it....

Oh I think I know the one...
