The Old Ferry Boat (circa 560 AD) is certainly older isn't it? Interesting then that the Guinness Book of Records gives that honour to The Royalist.
The Guinness Book of Records also lists Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans as "England's oldest inn", but that one is dated circa 1600 AD.
The Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham also claims to be the oldest inn in England, but at 1189 AD seems well out of the running.
The St Anne's Castle situated in the village of Great Leighs is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and lays claim to be the oldest licensed premises in England, as it served ale to the pilgrims travelling to St. Thomas a' Becket's Tomb in the 12th Century..... Certainly it has been an ale house since way back in the middle ages, although at some point it was, rather ironically, an hermitage.
Then there's Ramada Ye Olde Bell Hotel Hurley is reputedly the oldest inn in England, built in 1135....
The Bingley Arms, Bardsey at 905 AD...
The Angel at Glastonbury...
The list just goes on and on. The Old Ferry Boat would be my guess.-

Are they staking their claim on the oldest foundations?
It's as bad as the Oak Tree in the Centre of England debate, there are several trees laying claim to that one!-

That would have been lovely. Had a cup of coffee in a little tea shop place... can't remember what it was called... opposite side of the square to the Royalist... kind of next door to the Lodge.
I really like Stow, but I'm not I'd want to live there... too many bloody tourists!
