An old favourite

I really love this lens... despite there being a small flaw in it I can't do anything about.

This is an example of Nikon's 20mm f/2.8D AF wide angle lens... and something that is rarely out of my camera bag.

The compact ultra-wideangle lens construction with Close-Range Correction (CRC) system offers 94 degree picture coverage with edge-to-edge sharpness.

Do I sound like a salesman?

While I often use this lens for landscapes and seascapes, it also comes in handy for capturing images like this:

I've got a pair of primes, 28mm and 50mm and I love em, amazingly good for the price, they're Canon's cheapest lenses if you don't count kit zooms.

I like to pop one on and go out without any extra zooms, see what I can do with just one view

If I win the lottery one of my first buys will be the ultra-wide completely corrected Canon 14mm L lens, it's amazing that something that short can come wth no distortion.

  I'm the same. I have this 20mm, a 50mm and a 105mm macro; all are great for making you work a little harder to get your shot and of course the quality is superb.
  
  I fancy an ultra-wide myself and I'd also like a long prime if money wasn't a problem.

    Hehe, I didn't even think of my 100mm macro, although that's a nice prime too! Is that the Nikon 105 or the Sigma? I was close to getting the Sigma version but my Canon bias won out.
    
    I was surprised at the good results on the Sigma 12-24mm because amazingly it can still be put on a full frame like mine... as for the long prime, that's another lottery buy I think, the 300 or 400mm prime with a 1.4x teleconverter.
    
    Mifsuds are probably wishing I'd win the lottery, I'd keep them in business for a month

      Lenses around the 100mm mark are fantastic for portraiture, as I'm sure you're aware... so you must include your 100mm Macro.
      
      I was lucky enough to be able to run a good comparison test between the Nikon, Sigma and Tamron lenses. Looking hard at the results there was little to choose between the Nikon and Sigma models, while I felt the Tamron was a bit soft around the edges. Still good value at the price, but...
      
      Having discounted the Tamron it was a straight two horse race and as much as I like Nikon glass I'm not precious about it and in the end was swayed by the difference in price since there was bugger all to choose between the quality of the images. In fact I preferred the "feel" of the Sigma lens in certain respects too, so that was the one I chose to buy.
      
      As an independent manufacturer, Sigma produce some really good stuff and are always worth considering.

        Yeah, the only non-Canon lens I've had has been a Sigma 70-300 zoom, it was great but I fear I'm not good at tripods so wanted IS...
        
        I have to admit if I could do a good test between lenses there's a chance I'd aim for Sigma's EX series over the Canon Ls but I fear I normally go for the safe option.

        Sigma's EX DG series are very good, especially those with the HSM motor if you're an AF fan.

        I'm a little of both, I tend to lean on AF for wildlife pics when they're zipping around, manual for macro and flowers and a bit of each for landscapes depending on how I'm feeling and what I'm snapping

        Pretty much the same here, although I'll admit I've used AF more since my eyesight deteriorated. There are still times when manual is the way forward for that special shot.

        Well, as much as I love my macro lens it is a little scatty on AF a lot of the time so I find a bit of manual tweaking is indispensible, wonderfully its got FTM that lets you make maunal changes even on AF so best of both worlds

        That's neat... mine is just a click in click out ring so easy to swap between, but doesn't offer that option.

        Normally it doesn't work that well, finger slips off the shutter button etc when trying to refocus, but I can change the AF and Exposure lock functions around so the button on the back locks AF instead, then I dont have to worry about moving the focus when pressing the shutter.
