When I was a wee lad the sleepy little village of Caerleon (population around 1000) boasted no less than 16 pubs...
This building, now a day nursery, was one of them... only the painted pub advert remains to remind us.

Maybe your friends are related to the Phillips family who owned Phillips Brewery (later Courage and now gone altogether) in Newport?
