Come on then... own up... how many of you have ever accused someone of having a mouth like a fishwife? I know I certainly have.

Thought I might have found the odd one or two hanging around here...

Interesting. I wonder if the fishwives of the west coast were the same as those over here on the east. Ours were Scottish women who followed the herring around the fishing ports, doing all the gutting. A job that local girls refused to do - a very stinky and unpleasant task, leading to chapped hands and excessive swearing (in Scottish!).

  Therein hangs the tale I think... when you're up to your arse in fish guts, you have to cut the air with something!
  
  I don't know for sure, but I'd guess the traditional fishing trade from North Shields was herring, whiting, hake and of course cod.

We have dozens of them on our American TV News Channels every day! Horrible, screeching, nasal, screaming women!

It is such a relief when we switch to BBCNewsAmerica and watch Katty Kay with her mellifluous and diction-correct voice! She is beautiful too and wears sexy clothes!
